Nelspruit is the largest city in Mpumalanga and is also the capital. It is a great place to stock up on any items that you might need if you are heading north to hike, camp or visit the Kruger Park. It is also a popular transit point for those heading into either neighbouring Mozambique or Swaziland.
The city lies in the hot lowveld valley of the Crocodile River. It's sub-tropical climate and soil is perfectly suited for citrus fruits, bananas, mangoes, pears, avocado, tobacco, coffee litchis, pawpaw and pecan nuts.
Nelspruit itself is a fairly large city, but still a pleasant environment to live in, with rich areas of natural bush in abundance and lilac jacaranda and purple bougainvilla as well as other shrubs lining the roads. It forms a rail and road link between Pretoria and Johannesburg to Maputo and to the Panorama Route and Kruger National Park.
Nelspruit has now been renamed to Mbombela - meaning Lots of people together in a small place.
Because of its popularity as a hub for visitors heading onward there is plenty accommodation, but the sight and activities tend to be in the surrounding towns.
Nelspruit lies at the edge of the Lowveld near the Kruger National Park, and enjoys relatively plentiful summer rainfall (an average of around 620 mm falls between September and March) and mild to hot subtropical conditions in the Kruger National Park.
Many visitors prefer the cool, dry winter season between May and August, the best time to visit for game-viewing because the vegetation is less dense making sightings more frequent.
